Take it in turns to be leaders - how communities grow in trust
July 14, 2026
As we move away from hierarchical structures, into more flat and circular structures, aligned with sociocracy, we will at some point have to step into a leadership role. Or a role which requires being a guide, coach or wise elder holding responsibility for decision making. Building any community, means that the workload has to be evenly distributed. One persons shoulders simply cannot carry the weight of the tribe.
It’s a myth that leaders are born leaders. We all have the capacity to step up and step in when a situation requires it. There are many stories from history to prove this. Joan of Arc comes to mind.
So as a quick checklist, here are 6 key aspects any leader in any situation for however long, will require:
Good Self Awareness - knowing who you are and what you can contribute to the team, is part of being authentic. This allows trust from others. If you are true to your personal archetype you can inspire and motivate others.
Balance - balancing work and play keeps us from burning out. Know when to stop and grab a beer and put your feet up.
Trust - trust of self and trust of others is essential. If you can’t delegate you can’t lead. Being is as important as doing.
Growth - as you are open to learning and growing you encourage others to do the same. It’s not about telling and advising it’s about enabling others to find their own solutions and insights.
Collaboration - there are always many people in the tribe. Building collaboration with all members is key. Sustainable success for all is the goal.
Change - it’s the only constant and one which requires honed navigational skills. Get good with this as soon as you can.
