A Proud Porto Statue- The Messenger by Irene Vilar

July 27, 2026

On my regular walks along the Douro, I love to stop by the statue crafted by the famous Porto sculptress Irene Vilar. Its fluidity and majesty at a location on the Portuguese Camino, and where the river and ocean are about to kiss, just aches with beauty. It’s reminiscent of an angel or Saint Michael; that it’s called a messenger suggests that Irene was working with divinity as she shaped such physical form. I’m always spellbound at the creativity which flows through people, to make a solid object from a creative idea. Long may we yearn for our unique creative imaginations to rise up and dance in the world to delight and defy. That’s the message for today.
